Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty
The HBO hit is based off a book set in Sydney, Australia, not Monterey, CA like where the show is set! And Reese Witherspoon's character is a brunette!
We join parents and students at a lovely elementary school set on the beach as they experience a bullying problem. It starts with a kindergartener strangling another but quickly ripples through the emotionally overwrought parents. They're quick to fight with each other yet never question if their children's behavior is due to their poor modeling.
The book is framed as a police investigation for a murder. We work our way up to trivia night at the school, enduring the petty gossip of the parents along the way. The gossip serves to frame the chapters perfectly as it paints a seemingly accurate picture of these helicopter parents.
Every chapter adds more detail and intrigue. There comes a point where the reader must know how it all ties together, and who the hell gets murdered. Who does it?? Why?? It's intoxicating.
General consensus: Fun, engrossing, and impossible to put down.
