Book Review #12

HIGH TIDE In TUSCON. Essays from Now or Never. by Barbara Kingsolver

Books of essays and books of short stories are never my first choice. I like to read things from cover to cover and these don't have the flow I seek. But I do love Kingsolver and it did come from my reliable source, so I thought I'd try it.

I was encouraged by the forward. She promised flow and said it should read like a novel. Unfortunately, I'll never be able to see that for myself because I couldn't get past the first chapter. Her flowery literature proved to be too much. She made a multi-page story out of saving a hermit crab. It could have been cute, sweet, even witty but it just ended up being too...Kingsolver! I was exhausted by the time I finished it. I knew if I pressed on I'd start to talk like her, and who knew what metaphors would ceaselessly pour from my mouth then! I had to stop.

Time to read before banishing from my presence: 1 hour
General consensus: Reads like a dozen roses.
