Heroes of the Frontier by Dave Eggers
Josie is a dentist in small Ohio town. She has two small children, and is happily absent one man-child.
We meet Josie as she's careening around Alaska in an RV, children in tow, trying to outrun her fears and bad memories. In the beginning, their adventures had me crying laughing. But as time went on, things took a more dangerous turn. Her adventures became increasingly risky and desperate, and there was no end goal in sight.
We learn about how she's broken, how her parents were broken, and that this legacy may persist for generations. We hope she'll get it together, and be strong for her children. But as the summer fires roar through Alaska, we're not sure they won't be consumed--if not by the flames, then perhaps by Josie's madness.
General consensus: A crazy story that's somewhat like his other work, A Hologram For A King yet instead of a man in Saudi Arabia trying to sort out his life that's spinning out of control, we have a mom in Alaska going through a crisis while trying not to let her children know.
