Into the Raging Sea by Rachel Slade
This is the engrossing true story of the sinking of the cargo ship El Faro off the Bahamas in 2015. They sailed into the eye of Hurricane Joaquin and lost 33 lives. The author interviews everyone even remotely involved that she can find, and uses only dialogue from the actual ship that was found on an audio recording after the sinking.
We get a look into what it takes to sail a large vessel, the harrowing journey of the crew, the response from emergency services and the Coast Guard, the family's reactions, and the resulting investigation. We are forced to conclude that a lot of what went wrong boiled down to corporate greed.
General consensus: I learned a ton about the merchant marine, Coast Guard, and the shipping industry in a captivating way.
