Book Review #28

Little Altars Everywhere: A Novel by Rebecca Wells

Siddalee Walker is my favorite little Southern sweetheart. She earned a place in my heart when she shared Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood with me. It was only appropriate that I read its complement.

The Walkers are a messed up clan. Mama drinks and Daddy drinks. Mama goes nuts and beats the kids, Daddy hides. The book has all the ingredients to be a pathetic downer. Forntunately, Rebecca Wells is an artist. She reflected on the life of the Walkers through the narrations of each family member, including their servants. The result is an honest and touching trip through the life of the Walkers where insanity, as well as comedy and tragedy, are commonplace.

Well, lookee there. That last sentence could have been out of NY Times review.

Time to read cover to cover: 3 days
General consensus: Inspiring for its style, but could have left out the molestation.
