Book Review #23

Message from Malaga by Helen McInnes

I was having a conversation with a client of our firm about his upcoming trip to Spain. Since I was so jazzed about the subject he decided to lend me a book he'd just finished reading. He told me it was a fun spy/thriller novel that had good descriptions of Spain. I opted to read it because I thought the word "Malaga" was pretty.

I stumbled from the get-go. How is it that only John Grisham can make me give a damn about the CIA, FBI, etc.? Message from Malaga started slowly and even after the first near-murder it still didn't pick up. I couldn't take it anymore; it didn't even have a convincing cover or gripping font. And if you'd like me to regale you with the plot, forget it. I was still trying to figure it out when I closed it forever.

The client was very understanding and said it was only fair that I lend him something to try. I gave him Pillars of the Earth. He said he'll have it back to me in a year.

Time to read before banishing from my presence: A week
General consensus: No, thank you.
