Book Report #185 - Shanghai Girls

Shanghai Girls by Lisa See

This book is fantastic literature, plus a history lesson, plus a rollercoaster of emotions. Lisa See, I bow down to you. You are my co-queen along with Beyonce.

There were two sisters, May and Pearl, living in Shanghai in 1937. They were beautiful girls and modeled for ads and magazines. Their conservative parents did not approve, but they were modern and didn't care. But then their dad gambled all their money away and sold them as brides, and Japan started bombing China. From then on, it's omg after omg.

Their father sold them to brothers who lived in Los Angeles, so they had to make their way out there. I do not want to give any spoilers because it was each surprise in the plot that added to my awe of the writing. And then the end. Holy crap. It's just unbelievable all the way through, and See maintains such mastery and control over the whole thing.

General consensus: I can't even. It's among the greatest books I've ever read.
