Book Report #171 The Girls

The Girls by Lori Lansens

Rose and Ruby are sisters living in the country out in the province of Ontario not too far a drive from Detroit. They're also conjoined twins; joined at the head so that they look out at the world together, which means that they can't look each other in the eyes without the help of a mirror.

It's Rose's autobiography but Ruby gets to write some chapters about her life. Their life? In a way theirs but purely because they move together. They are two individuals bound together at the head. We learn about their birth and childhoods, how people respond to them, and how they respond to that.

Much of what we read is about their beautiful parents who took them in when their birthmother fled the hospital. They are such rich characters that we feel like we can drop in for dinner unannounced and they'd be happy to host us.

This a story full of deep love but it's not devoid of shock. You never saw this story coming and I'm not about to spoil it.

General consensus: Blew me away. As good as writing gets.
